In addition to seeing three world-premiere Humana Festival plays, the conference luncheons will enable registrants to peek behind the curtain to discover how this internationally acclaimed event has introduced nearly 450 plays into the American and international theatre’s general repertoire over its forty-year history.

Actors Theatre has committed to providing several speakers for our CAVORT program. Selections for the 40th Humana Festival of New American Plays were announced in November. Now that the plays are known, Actors Theatre is engaged in building the various schedules that are essential for producing them (casting, rehearsals, artist schedules, etc.).  Particulars of those schedules will not be in place until January. Once the Humana Festival schedules are determined, Actors Theatre will be able to confirm who our CAVORT speakers will be.  In the meantime, we know the nature of what our CAVORT registrants will learn about The Humana Festival, its plays and playwrights.

See complete biographies on all the conference speakers here.

Humana Festival 101

A panel of Actors Theatre of Louisville staff members will fill you in on what you may have wondered about the Humana Festival:  What is it?  Why Humana?  How are seven plays selected from the 2,000 submitted annually? What is the unique page-to-the-stage process that draws playwrights, actors, and designers to the Humana Festival? Who comes to the Humana Festival?  What are the Humana Festival’s Visitors’ Weekends? What is the Humana Festival Anthology?  And, last but certainly not least, what is the role of volunteers during The Humana Festival?

Peek Behind the Curtain at “Wondrous Strange”

On Sunday morning, CAVORT registrants will have a unique opportunity to visit a rehearsal of the original anthology “Wondrous Strange” prior to its opening.

“Wondrous Strange” is a collection of short pieces by Martyna Majok, Meg Miroshnik, Jiehae Park, and Jen Silverman commissioned by Actors Theatre of Louisville, directed by Marti Lyons, and performed by the 2015-2016 Acting Apprentice Company. These imaginative playwrights use Kentucky’s rich ghost lore as the springboard for a wide-ranging exploration of the supernatural and uncanny, and what our stories about ghosts—chilling, poignant, or unexpectedly funny—reveal about us.

Following the rehearsal, participants in its development will share the fascinating story behind the multi-month process that engaged playwrights, Acting Apprentices, and production designers in a collaboration leading to its creation.  Panelists will offer an opportunity for Q & A.

Humana Festival Play Insights

A panel featuring dramaturgs for the Humana Festival plays that registrants will see during CAVORT 2016 will share the “story behind the story.”  Learning the background behind each play’s origin and development will enhance your viewing experience. Not quite sure what a dramaturg is?  This is your opportunity to find out once and for all.  Conference registrants will have the opportunity to ask their burning questions about the two plays they will have already seen and/or about the opening night premiere they will see that evening.
